Summon E.C to Parliament- Minority Leader

The Minority  Leader in Parliament Haruna Iddrisu has requested that chairperson of the Electoral Commission be summoned before members.

This summon is to give Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa the chance to brief the house about the ongoing limited registration exercise across the country.

According to the Minority Leader, there have been several complaints in relation to the exercise at various constituencies including Tamale South where he represents.

These complaints according to the legislator ranges from shortage of forms to confusion between online and offline applications among others.

“Mr. Speaker, as representatives of the people, the right to vote cannot be a right in denial and therefore if you can direct that the Chairperson appears before this house… we are major stakeholders and she must come and share with us roadmap on how she intends to walk the government’s initiatives of the President”. The Minority Leader insisted.

However in responding to the request of his colleague, the Majority Leader, also Chairman of the business committee in Parliament said the request has not been brought before the committee.

Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu insisted that the Minority Leader follow and use the laid down procedures of Parliament to have his request granted.

“… He raised it at the business committee and I strongly suggested to him that the business committee does not generate it own agenda; and that if he has issues he should apply to the Speaker. If the Speaker agrees and we have to do that then the business committee will consider same.  But until then there is nothing before the committee to invite the commission”. Majority Leader noted.

Commenting on the matter, Speaker, RT. Hon. Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye directed the Minority Leader to use the right procedure to invite the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission to Parliament for any answers or briefing on matters of his request.
