It fully occupies our emotions, bodies, and minds, and has many different incarnations.<\/p>\n<p>It can be confusing to navigate the world of human desire \u2014 from one-night-stands to committed relationships, nervous flirting to \u2018comfort zone\u2019 intimacy \u2014\u00a0and then there\u2019s always the question of whether our partners feel the same way.<\/p>\n<p><b>To alleviate some of the confusion, I\u2019ve outlined emotional and physical cues that help you determine which stage your own relationship is in now.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s related to my F.A.C.E.S. stages of relationships, which I explain in-depth in my book\u00a0Neuroloveology: The Power to Mindful Love &amp; Sex.<\/p>\n<p>Fascination, adventure, comfort, energy and success each come with their own unique cocktail of brain chemicals that give you a heady rush or a sense of deep bonding, depending on the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Like Robert Sternberg\u2019s \u201ctriangular theory of love\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0which identifies intimacy, passion and commitment as the three main components of love \u2014 it\u2019s this interweaving of sexuality, emotional bonding and long-term attachment that make up a fully successful romantic relationship.<\/p>\n<p>However you label them, the main ingredients remain the same, and they govern our love lives.<\/p>\n<p><b>Read on to find out what\u2019s happening to your emotions and your brain chemicals at each of the six phases of love.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Romance is when:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You feel butterflies when you talk or see each other.<\/li>\n<li>You want to do things to make each other happy.<\/li>\n<li>You want to understand his or her mind and what makes it tick.<\/li>\n<li>You want to spend as much time together as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Your brain is reacting to pheromones, triggering attraction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Desire is when:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You having a longing for another.<\/li>\n<li>You want to experience a romantic and sexual journey together.<\/li>\n<li>Your curiosity and erotic imagination for each other is fertile.<\/li>\n<li>You can experience erotic connection together and separately.<\/li>\n<li>Your body releases androgens (like testosterone) and\/or estrogens, causing arousal to blossom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Lust is when:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have a longing for sex to fulfill your emotions.<\/li>\n<li>You feel so horny you just want to get laid by someone.<\/li>\n<li>You experience intense erotic fantasies with another.<\/li>\n<li>Your ultimate goal is sexual satisfaction and fulfillment.<\/li>\n<li>Your Desire \u2018cocktail\u2019 continues to arouse, adding in Nitric Oxide, which increases blood flow to the genitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Passion is when:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You intensely want someone physically and emotionally.<\/li>\n<li>You create mystery and have confidence individually and together.<\/li>\n<li>You have fun, laugh, and create surprises, novelty and playfulness.<\/li>\n<li>You make love creatively and focus on each other\u2019s pleasure.<\/li>\n<li>Adrenaline is making you feel \u201cmadly in love.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Intimacy is when:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are comfortable sharing everything without any fear.<\/li>\n<li>You show each other appreciation through words and actions.<\/li>\n<li>You make a commitment to each other.<\/li>\n<li>When your two hearts feel like one!<\/li>\n<li>Your brain releases oxytocin, the bonding chemical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>6. Love is when:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have a strong feeling of affection for another.<\/li>\n<li>You want your beloved to express their love with words and actions.<\/li>\n<li>Your partner brings out intimate communication, touching, kissing and spiritual connection within you.<\/li>\n<li>You have the five ingredients of friendship, respect, trust, communication and passion for your love to last.<\/li>\n<li>Your brain releases oxytocin (the bonding chemical) and vasopressin, the long-term commitment hormone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s not rocket science, but it is scientific.<\/p>\n<p>Each stage of love delivers new sensations and experiences, and each one sparks a unique set of reactions in you and your partner. It\u2019s all there for you to enjoy to the fullest.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m often asked specifically about desire in regard to the role it plays in relationships, as well as how to know what is and is not healthy along the spectrum of love, lust, and intimacy.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a\u00a0quick exercise I give people in order to figure out the answers to these questions for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Finish the sentences below and then see for yourself if that fits with your ideas about emotional and mental well-being.
