International\ncollaboration remains the best hope to combat issues like climate change and\npolitical division, which are getting harder to solve, the United Nations\u2019\nSecretary General Antonio Guterres said in his New Year message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed to Yemen as an example, where\nrecent breakthrough talks; \u201chave created an opportunity for peace\u201d, and also an\nagreement between warring factions in South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When international cooperation works,\nthe world wins,\u201d Mr Guterres said in a video released by the UN and obtained by\nthe Ghana News Agency in Accra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN Secretary General said: \u201cIn 2019, the\nUnited Nations will continue to bring people together to build bridges and\ncreate space for solutions. We will keep up the pressure and we will never give\nup\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Xi Jinping of China said the country\nwill continue to open its doors to the world in 2019 but will do so with its\nsovereignty in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As we open our eyes to look at the\nworld, we are faced with huge changes, changes not seen in 100 years,\u201d Mr Xi\nsaid in a New Year address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo matter how the international situation\nchanges, China’s confidence and determination to safeguard national sovereignty\nand security will not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChina’s sincerity and goodwill for\nmaintaining world peace and promoting common development will not change,”\nthe Chinese President stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel pledged\nto get her country more involved on the international stage, stressing;\n\u201cComplex global problems such as climate change, migration and terrorism cannot\nbe solved alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We build on what our predecessors have\nleft us and shape the present for those who come after us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy guiding belief is that we will only master\nthe challenges of our time if we stick together and collaborate with others\nacross borders”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Merkel, who has given up leadership of her\nChristian Democratic Union party and will step down as Chancellor in 2021, also\npledged to increase spending on defence and aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Kingdom, Prime Minister Theresa May\nsaid the UK achieved a lot in 2018, and urged politicians to back her embattled\nBrexit deal, two weeks before a vote in parliament and under four months before\nthe scheduled exit from the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms May said allowing the Brexit deal to go\nthrough will allow the government to focus on solving domestic problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe employment rate is at a record high. Our\ndebt is starting its first sustained fall in a generation. And the number of\npeople in absolute poverty is at a record low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we come together in 2019, I know we can\nmake a success of what lies ahead and build a country that truly works for\nevery one of us,” she stated in the New Year message<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From France, President Emmanuel Macron said he\nhas three wishes for 2019: “truth, dignity, and hope” and called for\nnational unity, and used the occasion to criticise elements of the recent\nanti-government protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Macron said while he understands people are\nupset, some protesters seeking to speak “in the name of the people”\nare undermining his government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome take as a pretext that they speak in the\nname of the people – but what people? Where? How? he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French President said; \u201cIn reality, they\nare nothing but a megaphone for a crowd full of hatred who rail against elected\nrepresentatives, forces of order, journalists, Jews, foreigners and\nhomosexuals. That, quite simply, is the negation of France.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin in the\nNew Year message called for national unity, amid ongoing tensions with western\ncountries and sanctions by the West against Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Putin emphasised the need to rely on\ninternal resources to improve living standards, and for citizens to act as\n“a strong, united team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We know for certain that we can achieve\nthe best for ourselves, for our families, for the home country, only with our\nown efforts and well-organised collaboration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chadian President Idriss Deby, in the New\nYear message also pledged to ensure that the long-delayed legislative and local\nelections in the central African state would be held in the first half of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe year 2019 will be marked by the holding\nof legislative and local elections,\u201d President Deby stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Deby is also hoping for an end to\nthe country\u2019s financial crisis, which was caused mainly by the slide in the\nprice of crude oil in 2014-2015; stressing that, the \u201ccoming year will be\npivotal in the battle to structurally transform our economy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President, Paul Biya of Cameroon focused on\nthe ongoing Anglophone crisis in the Northwest and Southwest regions of the\ncountry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pledged to dialogue with persons of\ngoodwill to end the crisis, or instruct the army to neutralise the rebels, if\nhis call for dialogue went unheeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an address that focused on reviewing the\nprogress made by his government, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, outlined\nachievements made in growing the economy, empowering the youth and fighting\ncrime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also emphasised \u2018the issue of African\nintegration in order to guarantee our prosperity\u2019, explaining that goods and\nservices produced in Uganda need a \u2018big market\u2019 that will absorb them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018\u2018Therefore, in 2019, I hope to work with the\nfraternal peoples of Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan to\nconsolidate the unity of East Africa,\u201d President Museveni said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The South Africa\u2019s President, Cyril Ramaphosa,\ncalled upon all eligible citizens to register to vote in the forthcoming\nelections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe urge all our people, particularly the\nyouth, to register to vote, and exercise their responsibility as patriotic\ncitizens of our great nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
