The\n Democratic Republic of Congo\u2019s Catholic Church is under fire for \nsuggesting it knows who won the country\u2019s presidential election on \nDecember 30 despite the results not being released, according to a \nReuters report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congo\u2019s\n electoral commission made the accusations Saturday saying that the \nChurch is \u201cpreparing an insurrection.\u201d On Thursday, Donatien Nshole, \nsecretary-general of the Church\u2019s bishops\u2019 conference (CENCO), announced\n that the vote tallies turned up favorably for one candidate. The \nrevelation was seen as a threat to authorities in case they had any \nhints of rigging the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\n announcement of voting trends by Priest Nshole is likely to brainwash \nthe population while preparing an insurrection that CENCO alone will be \nresponsible for,\u201d commission president Corneille Nangaa wrote in a \nletter to CENCO president Marcel Utembi, seen by Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nangaa\n added that CENCO\u2019s pronouncement jeopardized codes of conduct and \nviolated electoral law. According to the report, only the electoral \ncommission is allowed to announce the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CENCO\n is widely seen as one of Congo\u2019s most powerful strongholds, and \ncurrently represents near 80 million residents in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n coalition \u201cdeplores … the partisan, irresponsible and anarchic \nattitude of CENCO,\u201d said Barnabe Kikaya Bin Karubi, an adviser to Kabila\n and spokesman for Shadary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n United Nations\u2019 Security Council has been requested to intervene. \nFrench U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre told the media that the \n15-member body \u2013 tasked with maintaining international peace and \nsecurity \u2013 would \u201ccontinue to monitor the electoral process in Congo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preliminary election results are set to be released Sunday, and final results will come in January 15. The new president will be sworn in three days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
