The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the embattled CEO of \ntroubled gold trading firm Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah, has been \narrested in the United Arab Emirate (UAE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The confirmation comes hours after the Headquarters of Dubai Police \nand the Director \u2013General of the Criminal Investigations Department of \nthe Ghana Police Service DCOP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah denied \nknowledge of the alleged arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have not arrested any Ghanaian national with that name [Nana \nAppiah Mensah] in our system,\u201d A Dubai intelligence officer told Starr \nNews\u2019 Ibrahim Alhassan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in a news release, Monday by its Director-General\/Public \nAffairs, ACP David Eklu, the Ghana Police Service said the Menzgold CEO \nwas arrested on December 7 in the gulf country \u201cto facilitate \ninvestigations into suspicion that he had been involved in a gold \ntrading deal gone bad within the Emirati jurisdiction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sources indicated that in 2016, an unnamed official of the Economic \nand Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) had recommended Menzgold to officials\n of Horizon Royal Diamonds for the supply of huge quantities of gold. \nThat recommendation came because, according to the sources, the Dubai \ncompany had been duped by some Ghanaians previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horizon Royal Diamonds and Menzgold duly established contact, \nhowever, before the deal could be struck, persons privy to the \ndiscussions presented themselves to Horizon Royal Diamonds with the \npromise of a better deal, to which officials of the Dubai-based company \nfell for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It turned out that Horizon Royal Diamonds alleged later that it \nparted with no less than $51 million for which no gold whatsoever was \nsupplied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials of Horizon Royal Diamonds later reverted to Menzgold\u2019s Nana\n Appiah Mensah in 2018, to supply them the gold, upon which request he \nis said to have demanded an undertaking not to be linked to the \ntransaction with Just Gold Company Limited, the company Horizon Royal \nalleges it paid the $51 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That undertaking duly arrived, spelling out Menzgold\u2019s disconnection \nwith the deal said to have gone bad and its lack of liability. Following\n that undertaking, Menzgold proceeded to supply 750kg of gold to Horizon\n Royal Diamonds, at an agreed price of $28 million at the time of \nsupply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPer the arrangement between the two companies, it is now worth $39 \nmillion and Nana had gone there to facilitate the retrieval of the money\n when the SWIFT transfer account details the guys in Dubai provided \nturned out to be fake. He wanted his money to come and sort out the \ncurrent situation with his company, but the guys rather reported him to \nthe Dubai authorities accusing him of fraud. That is why he was arrested\n but God willing, he will be out by Wednesday to return to Ghana,\u201d a \nsource close to Nana Appiah Mensah told Graphic Online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The source said Menzgold had duly reported the fake SWIFT detail to \nEOCO, insisting that \u201chis arrest has nothing to do with Ghana police or \nInterpol; he only wanted his money to come and sort out Menzgold \ncustomers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe will come home soon, hopefully by Wednesday he will be freed. The bail bond posted by the Dubai authorities has been met. Ghanaian officials in Dubai even visited him on Sunday and if they are minded to, they could be telling the public the true story of why NAM1 was arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
