{"id":1994,"date":"2019-01-14T18:01:11","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T18:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aptnewsghana.com\/?p=1994"},"modified":"2019-01-14T18:01:17","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T18:01:17","slug":"govt-to-merge-gij-nafti-and-gil-in-order-to-obtain-university-license","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aptnewsghana.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/14\/govt-to-merge-gij-nafti-and-gil-in-order-to-obtain-university-license\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t to merge GIJ, NAFTI and GIL in order to obtain University license"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor  Kwesi Yankah has hinted of the great benefit of consolidating Ghana  Institute of Journalism, Ghana Institute of Languages and National Film  and Television Institute (NAFTI) into one tertiary Institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Prof. Yankah, this is to better their chances of \nobtaining a university license as compared to them obtaining it as \nindividual schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in an interview, Professor Yankah disclosed that even though\n two of the three schools have applied for University License \nseparately, their chances of obtaining it as a consolidated institution \nare far greater than separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCertainly it is one of the legislative instruments we are  considering because GIJ applied to be a university separately and NAFTI  also applied to be a university. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSitting back we realized that maybe none of them on its own has \nfully satisfied the requirement to be a university, but if you merge \nthem, they can become various colleges or faculties within one \nuniversity as it has been done in several parts of the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2018, Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, mentioned that \nthe government has initiated processes to merge three of the country\u2019s \npublic tertiary institutions, Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), the \nNational Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) and the Ghana Institute \nof Languages (GIL) into one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consolidated institutions would be known as the National Institute of Communication and Media Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Ofori-Atta, presenting the 2019 budget statement in Parliament said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMr. Speaker, processes have also commenced to merge the Ghana \nInstitute of Languages, National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) \nand Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) into the National Institute of \nCommunication and Media Arts.
