MP for North Tongu Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called for a bi-partisan parliamentary inquiry into what has become one of the biggest financial fraud in the country\u2019s history, the MenzGold saga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nana Appiah Mensah (NAM 1)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Since the shut down, aggrieved customers of Menzgold have staged \nseveral demonstrations in a bid to put pressure on government to \nretrieve their investments but to no avail as government has repeatedly \ninsisted that taxpayers\u2019 money will not be used to rescue them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However authorities issued an arrest warrant for the CEO, Nana Appiah\n Mensah also known as NAM 1, and some of the company\u2019s directors in \nconnection with money laundering and defrauding by false pretense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since his arrest warrant was issued, the Ghanaian media has been \nbuzzing with news of his arrest in different countries until yesterday \nJanuary 14 that the Ghana Police Service issued a statement confirming \nhis arrest in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials from Ghana have however departed to Dubai to begin processes of a possible extradition of NAM 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Hon. Ablakwa in a facebook comment stressed that, there are so \nmany questions begging for answers with regard to the whole Menzgold \nbrouhaha, but these answers could be arrived at only through a \nbi-partisan parliamentary probe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below is the Full statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, their parliaments would have long commenced a full-blown bi-partisan enquiry into this Menzgold debacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the very least, the terms of reference would have included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An understanding of the Menzgold business model to really ascertain if it does fit the classical definition of a Ponzi scheme;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If, indeed, it was a Ponzi scheme, how was Menzgold allowed to operate all these years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What led to the inability of the state to carry out its basic \nnon-negotiable public duty of protecting citizens by the seeming \nabdication or impotence or complicity of regulators, tax authorities and\n the national security apparatus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An assessment of the impact of Menzgold\u2019s collapse on the economy and mitigation options;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The true circumstances of how Nana Appiah Mensah left Ghana and if, indeed, he is on the run;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring possibilities for the compensation of the millions of \nMenzgold victims especially after a thorough credible independent \ntracking of Nana Appiah Mensah\u2019s assets and bank accounts across the \nworld;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An examination of the existing legal and enforcement climate in \nGhana, which makes it possible for such to happen and recommendations to\n forestall future occurrence seeing that apparently many of such schemes\n are going on waiting to explode in our faces in a matter of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sincerely pray for the day our parliament will shed off its rather \nsad reputation of being weak and tied to the apron strings of the \nExecutive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sincerely pray that some colleagues across the aisle will have the \ncourage to join those of us on this side who believe we can look into \nthis matter in the supreme interest of Ghana irrespective of partisan \nconsiderations and really depart from the farcical precedents of recent \nbi-partisan probes where partisanship trounced truth and conscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though I am in no way connected to Menzgold, neither am I one of\n their victims, contrary to infantile fabrications in circulation; it is\n my considered view that those of us in elected office and who ought to \nact as the true representatives of the people cannot afford to fold our \narms and merely join the greed and naivety chorus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaders, and, especially the people\u2019s representatives, cannot abandon\n nor betray their constituents in such a crude manner as being suggested\n by some. That would not be the kind of representative democracy Rt. \nHon. Justice D.F. Annan, Rt. Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey, Hon. J.H. Mensah \nand others laid down their lives for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May this 7th Parliament stand up to be counted and may history not \nsay of us that we were the representatives who failed to represent the \npeople and failed to secure the people\u2019s future when the opportunity \nbeckoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
