The Government has\nexpressed disgust over the insensitive and partisan politicization that has\ncharacterised discussions of the Menzgold saga and urged political parties to\nrefrain from desperate attempts to score non-existent political points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister of Information, addressing a news briefing in Accra, on Thursday, urged the media to prioritise the issues of concern to the aggrieved Menzgold customers and interrogate those matters and avoid the \u201cpollution\u201d that had characterized the discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Government was focused on using the\nsecurity agencies and judicial processes, either civil or criminal, to recover\ncustomers locked up investments in Menzgold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister said, now that the security\nagencies had received reports from the aggrieved customers about the defraud by\nfalse pretences, they would employ all powers of the State, including warrant\nof arrest, extradition and other judicial processes to investigate the accused\nperson so that the law would take its course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reiterated government\u2019s earlier expression\nof not paying Menzgold customers with taxpayers\u2019 money and sympathised with\ncustomers and clients of the embattled gold dealership firm, urging Ghanaians\nto remain calm while a solution is found to the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Oppong Nkrumah disagreed with the\nassertions that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) was not quick to\nact on the matter, saying that, when EOCO instituted an enquiry into the\noperations of Menzgold last year, following a directive from the Securities and\nExchange Commission ordering the company to halt its gold vault business, some\nGhanaians even questioned EOCO for interfering in someone\u2019s \u201clegitimate\nbusiness\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answering a question on the reported\ngovernment delegation to Dubia, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said it was rather a\ndelegation of security operatives, including a Deputy Attorney-General, to\nprovide legal advice to the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \nMembers of the delegation to Dubai include Interpol, Ghana Police\nService, Criminal Investigations Department and a Deputy Attorney General.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the team wanted to get a deeper\nunderstanding of the nature of charges levelled against the Menzgold owner,\nNana Appiah Mensah, by the Dubai Police and explore the possibility of\nextradition since Ghana had no extradition treaty with the UAE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said it was prudent to allow the team to\ncomplete its fact-finding mission in Dubai and upon their arrival home,\nGhanaians would be apprised on the issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
