The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo\u2013Addo, will host the sixth Merck African Asia\nLuminary conference in Accra in October, which is aimed at bringing\nstakeholders together to discuss the management of diseases in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual conference,\nwhich is initiated by Merck Foundation, a philanthropic arm of Merck Germany,\nis expected to be attended by more than 1,000 healthcare providers, policy\nmakers, academia and researchers from over 60 African and Asian countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The objective of the\nconference, scheduled for October 29 to 30, is to improve disease management,\nearly detection and prevention, build healthcare and scientific research\ncapacity as well as improve access to quality and equitable healthcare\nsolutions across Africa and Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs Akufo-Addo will\nco-chair the event together with Dr Rasha Kelej, the Chief Executive Officer of\nMerck Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the launch of\nthe \u201cMerck More Than a Mother Campaign\u201d in Accra on Monday, Mrs Akufo-Addo\nexpressed the hope that the first ladies, ministers of health, and other\nparticipants to attend the conference would make the most out of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She expressed the hope\nthat the participants would share knowledge and experiences that would help\nimprove access to equitable and innovative healthcare solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cMerck More Than a\nMother Campaign,\u201d a campaign aimed at increasing advocacy and efforts against\ninfertility in women, was launched in collaboration with the Fertility Society\nof Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign would\nfocus mainly on preventive action against infertility thereby empowering\ncouples on the need to seek care on time to prevent infertility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There would also be\nidentification of interventions to help build fertility care capacity in the\ncountry so that infertile couples would eventually have access to information,\nhealthcare and change of mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on the\nCampaign, Mrs Akufo-Addo, who is the Ambassador of the \u201cMerck More than a\nMother campaign,\u201d said she learnt from the fifth edition of the conference in\nSenegal, last year, that one in every four couples in developing countries\nsuffered infertility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat disturbed me\nmost was that majority of infertility cases are due to infectious diseases such\nas Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Genital Mutilation, unsafe abortion and\nunsafe delivery. These are mostly preventable\u201d the First Lady said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said she was,\ntherefore, happy that the main objective of the campaign was \u201cpreventive\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Lady\nexpressed a strong belief in the critical role of the media to raise awareness\nabout health and social issues and urged them to help address the sensitive\nissue of infertility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She commanded Merck\nFoundation for partnering Ghana through its Merck Cancer Access Programme and\nalso providing Oncology Fellowship and sponsoring Master\u2019s Degree courses for\nsome Ghanaian doctors and Embryologists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I must state that\nwe are far from the number of oncologists and embryologists required for our\npopulation of about 30 million. I intend to work with the Ministry of Health\nand the Merck Foundation to expand these programmes to increase the number of\noncologists and embryologists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On her part, Dr Kelej\nsaid Merck Foundation would continue its partnership with Ghana to build\nhealthcare capacities and train doctors in the fields of Diabetes,\nHypertension, Fertility and Cancer care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur aim is to improve\nthe health and well-being of people of the Continent,\u201d she emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Kelej noted that\nthe Foundation would work with the Ministry of Health to improve access to\nquality and equitable fertility care in Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kwaku Agyemang\nManu, the Minister of Health, said infertility was a disease that could be\ntreated through science and urged couples with the condition to seek treatment\ntogether and stop blaming women as the cause and the only infertile partner in\na relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Present at the launch\nwere Mrs Cynthia Morrison, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social\nProtection, and Dr Elikem Hiadzi, the President of Fertility Society of Ghana,\nas well as the Mr Affail Monney, and Mrs Linda Asante-Adjei, President and\nVice-President, respectively, of the Ghana Journalists Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
