The Police Cyber Crime Unit says it has recorded 10 cases of \nextortion by sex, referred to as \u201csextortion,\u201d since the beginning of \nthis year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though figures for the period preceding 2019 were worrying, officials say the recent trend constitutes an alarming increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director of the Unit, Chief Superintendent Gustav Yankson, warns \ninternet users to desist from putting out detailed personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference was organized by the Institute of Distance Learning of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the theme, \u201cCyber Crime: A threat to National Security,\u201d it was targeted for students pursuing security-related courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sextortion \u2013 coined from two words, \u201csex\u201d and \u201cextortion\u201d \u2013 involves using a person\u2019s nude picture for blackmail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perpetrators make repeated monetary demands of their victims and \nthreaten to share their nude pictures online, if they refuse to succumb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Supt. Yankson says the practice, which is common across the \nglobe, is gradually gaining ground in Ghana and targeted mostly at \nwomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLadies are still taking nude pictures of themselves. We tell them not to but they still do it,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The perpetrators make countless monetary demands and when their \nvictims fail to comply they threaten to share their nude pictures \nonline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Yankson advocates that internet users maintain healty \u201ccyber \nhygiene\u2019 practices to protect unsuspecting individuals from falling \nvictim to internet predators and ensure a safe digital Ghana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof Imoro \nBraimah, says the University aims to train students to be well-equipped \nwith tools to fight cybercrime<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe, as an academic institution, are trying to get into the minds of the miscreants of technology so we can fight the menace,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
