Some readers sent me a link (January 22, 2019) titled, \u201cItaly wants \nFrance sanctioned for \u2018creating poverty in Africa\u2019.\u201d That morning, I had\n just watched a BBC report on that very same subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the link, Italy\u2019s deputy Prime Minister, Luigi Di Maio, had \naccused France for their policies in Africa that \u201chave created poverty \nand caused\u201d the massive migrations of poor Africans into parts of \nEurope, including Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nkrumah and CFA franc<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deputy asserted: \u201cIf France didn\u2019t have its African colonies – \nbecause that\u2019s what they should be called – it would be the 15th largest\n economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead it\u2019s among the first, exactly because of what it is doing in \nAfrica.\u201d He continued: \u201cFrance is one of those countries that by \nprinting money for 14 African states prevents their economic development\n and contributes to the fact that the refugees leave and then die in the\n sea or arrive on our coasts\u201d.<\/ins>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the deputy, \u201cFrance was manipulating the economies of 14\n African countries that use the CFA franc \u2013 a colonial era currency\u201d \nwhich supports the French Treasury and keeps it afloat to the cost of \nthe francophone African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That may come as a surprise to many Africans today, but that very point was mooted by Kwame Nkrumah during the independence struggles in the 1950s.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his book, \u201cNeo-colonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism\u201d, he \nnoted that of the Francophone countries, for example, \u201cthe international\n financial positions of these countries [and] their operations accounts\u201d\n are controlled by the French Treasury, and are \u201cbeing used in such a \nway as to impoverish\u201d the Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is on that note that Nkrumah\u2019s vision for African Unity continues \nto ring loud and clear, and who stood better to resound the urgent call \nthan Nkrumah\u2019s own daughter, Samia Yaba Nkrumah? She recently delivered \nthe following address at the King Centre in Atlanta, Georgia. It went \nlike this: Dr King visits Ghana, 1957<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greetings from Ghana and Africa; your home, the home of every single \nAfrican. After all, Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah said, \u201cI am not an African \nbecause I was born in Africa. I am an African because Africa was born in\n me\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thank the King Centre, my dear sister Bernice, and all of you, for \nincluding me in this historic meeting and gathering. I am here not in my\n personal capacity as such, but for what I represent. And that is a \nvision for the total freedom and unity of Africa and Africans \neverywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, many of us perhaps were not born by 1957, when Ghana became \nindependent. But before the independence celebrations took place, the \ngovernment of Ghana thought that, \u201cNo, we cannot celebrate without the \npresence of some prominent sons and daughters: Africans who are living \nabroad\u201d. Dr King was one of those invited to witness that historic \ndeclaration of independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, our links go that far and deep<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr King came to Ghana in 1957. And there, he witnessed the historic \ncelebrations and heard Kwame Nkrumah\u2019s declaration that \u201cThe \nindependence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked with the total \nliberation of Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He meant Africa and Africans. And for us, Africa is not only the \ncontinent: it is Africans everywhere on the globe; North, South, East, \nWest Africa; the Caribbean; North America; Brazil; Australia: everywhere\n where Africans live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in Accra, Ghana 1957, Dr King met and interacted with the head of\n the official US delegation, Richard Nixon. These two men met in Accra, \n1957, something that we would have thought it very difficult to happen \nright here at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that just shows us what a shared vision can do: It can do the \nimpossible. The impossible becomes possible. And I hope this is what has\n brought me here to be with you today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year of return<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have a mission to accomplish. A mission to realise the dreams of \ngreat people such as Dr King and his dear wife, Bernice\u2019s mum. A mission\n to realise the vision of Kwame Nkrumah for the total unity and freedom \nof Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year as I speak, the government and people of Ghana, the \nPresident of Ghana, have declared it \u201cThe year of return\u201d. Many Africans\n from here have been invited to come. Come back home. Come back home and\n let us work and sing together. It\u2019s not going to be easy, because we \nhave our share of problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, we have some tall buildings in some neighbourhoods; we have some\n few industries; we have excellent food, but we are importing a lot of \nour food. We have about sixty per cent of the land in the continent \nstill not cultivated. Sixty per cent of our population is below the age \nof 25 in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average African is a young person. So we have a lot of work to \ndo. But we are never going to accomplish this work if we work \nseparately: Ghanaians alone, Africans in North America alone, Congolese \npeople alone, Egyptians alone, South Africans alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only way we can realise the dream of our fathers and mothers is for us to work together. Africa must unite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa must unite<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kwame Nkrumah said it. He didn\u2019t say Africa could unite; he said \n\u201cAfrica must unite\u201d. So my dear brothers and sisters, let us take today \nas the beginning of thinking and planning and conscientising ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t have to come home physically, because – as we know – \neverything happens in our thoughts and in our minds. And thank God, the \nalmighty God, that we are speaking in a church. Because it\u2019s our \nconsciousness that first of all needs to be freed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will be free. We will be free of poverty, of lack, of dependency, \nof exploitation, of discrimination, if our consciousness become free of \nall those ills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May the almighty God guide us. May the pan-African spirit of our \nancestors give us the strength and the courage to do the impossible. \nAfrica must unite! Amen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
