The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu<\/a>, has told the media to be Ghana bias in their reportage. According to him, that predisposition must not be lop-sided to the state when a citizen’s right is being abused by the coercive powers of the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 “As press\npeople, you are entitled to be bias in favour of Ghana. The only time when your\nbias is not required is when it comes to human rights. In that case, your bias\nshould be in favour of the individual because the state is already powerful but\nin any other matter, you are encouraged to be bias in favour of your country\nGhana” he emphasized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Osei Owusu was addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps\nat a day’s sensitization workshop organized by the Ghana Free Zones Board\n(GFZB) in Accra on February 4, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop, which brought together the top hierarchy of\nthe GFZB and Parliamentary reporters, was intended to expose members of the\nPress Corps to the mandate and operations of the Board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though the First Deputy Speaker acknowledged the media’s\nrole in safeguarding the airwaves, he said: “Regrettably, sometimes you\nbecome the source of misinformation and deliberate lies because you [the\nreporter] are not well informed or you are aligned.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A chunk of the reports on the international media about\ntheir countries, Mr. Owusu, said were not always the truth but presented in a\nway that will make their countries look good as against any other country; a\nthing he said Ghanaian journalists must emulate to sell the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zeroing in on the electronic media, particularly the Twi\nspeaking ones, Joe Wise, as he is affectionately called said their reports\n“many at times” were “opinions and commentary rather than\nfacts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the First Deputy Speaker who is also the MP for\nBekwai, “a lot of people rely on the information you put out to form\nopinion,” citing himself as an example where he was convinced to invest in\none of the defunct banks based on a newspaper write-up regarding the financial\nstrength of the bank, asking the media to be circumspect in their reports with\nbrand Ghana in mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Kwame Nsiah Asante, Head of Estate and Enclave at GFZB,\non his part said the decision to introduce Parliamentary reporters to the inner\nworkings of the Board was critical, taking into consideration the role it plays\nin information dissemination in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Asante said investment was a shared responsibility,\nunderlying the importance of the media as a link between the GFZB and the\ninvestment public, disclosing that 235 companies, 178 active and 56 inactive,\nwere operating in the Free Zones Enclave of the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the doors of the GFZB were opened to the media on\nany information that needed clarification to help attract investors into the\ncountry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Nana Agyeman\nBirinkorang, said the training would help members to effectively report on\nactivities of the board especially on their issues that may come before\nParliament. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said as specialized reporters, it was important other\ninstitutions of state emulated the GFZB by giving the Press Corps the\nintricacies of their operations and mandate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop was on the theme “The Parliamentary Reporter as an Effective Link Between Parliament and the Public.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
