{"id":3000,"date":"2019-03-11T12:42:23","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T12:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aptnewsghana.com\/?p=3000"},"modified":"2019-03-11T12:42:33","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T12:42:33","slug":"we-are-anxious-about-our-children-families-of-kidnapped-ladies-declare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aptnewsghana.com\/index.php\/2019\/03\/11\/we-are-anxious-about-our-children-families-of-kidnapped-ladies-declare\/","title":{"rendered":"We are anxious about our children, families of kidnapped ladies declare"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 200 days since the first of three young ladies was \nkidnapped in Sekondi\/Takoradi, distraught family members of the victims \nsay their patience is running out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They expressed surprise at the silence of the government and the police on how far the rescue efforts had gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to them, they had endured excruciating mental torture, \nanxiety and desperation and, therefore, wanted the authorities to save \nthe situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The kidnapping<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between August and December 2018, three kidnapping cases were \nreported to the police from Kansaworodo, Diabene and West Fijai in \nSekondi\/Takoradi in the Western Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first victim, Priscilla Blessing Bentum, 21, a third-year student\n of the University of Education, Winneba, was kidnapped at Kansaworodo \non August 17, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second, Ruth Love Quayson, 18, a senior high school graduate \nliving with her parents at Diabene, was kidnapped at the Butumegyabu \nJunction, popularly known as Bu Junction, on December 4, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third, Priscilla Mantebea Koranchie, who turned 16 years on March\n 3, a student of the Sekondi College (SEKCO) who lived with her parents \nat West Fijai, a suburb of Takoradi, was kidnapped at a spot near \nNkroful Junction in Takoradi on December 21 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Priscilla\u2019s parents paid ransom of GH\u00a21,000 to the alleged kidnappers but they failed to release her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Nigerian, Samuel Udoetuk Wills, 28, who was arrested as a prime suspect is still in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all the three instances when Wills allegedly kidnapped the three \ngirls, the police said the suspect struck acquaintances with the victims\n for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptnewsghana.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/23\/kidnapper-promised-victims-jobs-phone\/\">kidnapper then contacted the victims several times through mobile  phone communication<\/a> and promised Blessing and Ruth jobs, while he  promised the third victim a mobile phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018We feel neglected\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to the Daily Graphic yesterday, some family members of the \nvictims said at the moment the mere mention of the names of the girls, \nevery knock on their doors and every telephone call to them increased \ntheir level of anxiety, since they did not even know if the girls were \nalive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said they felt neglected by the state, the <a href=\"http:\/\/mogcsp.gov.gh\/\">Ministry of Gender,  Children and Social Protection<\/a> and the police, since those institutions  had kept them in the darkness for long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial eagerness attached to the issue, the families said, had \ngone down drastically and regular updates on investigations had not been\n forthcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A father\u2019s pain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Priscilla\u2019s father, Mr Alexander Koranchie, said the families of the \nvictims were aware that the suspect was in court on the charge of \nescaping from lawful custody, which was not really helping matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a voice full of helplessness and anger, he said: \u201cThe level of  anxiety is too much. I went to court the last time, knowing very well  that the substantive case [kidnapping] has not been called, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptnewsghana.com\/index.php\/2019\/03\/05\/takoradi-mob-action-in-court-kidnap-suspect-beaten\/\">but I just  wanted to hold the suspect and ask him the whereabouts of my child and  the two others<\/a>. Probably he would understand our pain and tell me as a  parent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He called on the authorities to do everything possible to save the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe police should get the suspect to tell me where my daughter and \nthe other two are; whether they are still alive and to direct us to \nwhere we could pick them. The hauling of the Nigerian up and down in the\n name of escape from custody increases our pain and anger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said what they wanted currently was a sustained campaign to recover the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe pictures are out there. If they are in Ghana, we appeal to the \npublic to help trace our children, for we are running out of patience,\u201d \nhe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The ransom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the quest to secure the release of the girls and before reporting \nto the police, the parents were made to pay ransoms of GH\u00a24,500 and \nGH\u00a21,300 to the alleged kidnappers, in the hope of getting their \ndaughters back, but to no avail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The escape<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 22, 2018, the police arrested Wills from his hideout on the outskirts of Kansaworodo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of calls between Wills and the victims were analysed and the\n police established his connection to the three kidnapped cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On his arrest, he gave several leads to the police which turned out \nto be wild goose chases and he was processed for court on December 24, \n2018 and remanded in police custody to reappear on 9 January, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, about 6.25 p.m. on December 30, 2018, he managed to escape \nthrough one of the ventilation windows of the cell after allegedly using\n a hacksaw blade to cut the iron rods used to secure the windows.
