The University of Education, Winneba<\/a> is currently shut down following violent protests Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This follows a standoff between the students and the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Professor Anthony Afful-Broni over the dismissal of three lecturers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students went on a rampage and smashed windows and glass doors of buildings on the Winneba<\/a> campus of the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday evening, they burnt tyres and clashed with the police, Joy News\u2019 Richard Kwadwo Nyarko reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Announcing\n the decision to close down the school, Central Regional Minister, who \nis the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) said \u201cevery \npassing day, the level of insecurity [on campus] increases\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\n began as a normal student protest on Tuesday escalated on Wednesday as \nstudents on the North campus disrupted classes there and marched to \nreplicate this at the Central campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\n were stopped from entering the South campus by police reinforcements \nWednesday afternoon. But the students retreated only to restart the \ndistrubances Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo on the advice of the Regional Security Council, we cannot continue to allow the university to be in session,\u201d Kwamena Duncan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students have until 6:00 pm Thursday to leave campus, the Minister added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What caused the protests?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a political fight between the Vice-Chancellor Rev. Fr. Professor Anthony Afful-Broni who appears to be on a purging spree, eliminating critics and dissidents<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until his swearing in last \nMarch, Prof. Afful Broni was the Pro-Vice-Chancellor while the then \nVice-Chancellor battled attempts to remove him. He did not suceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni \ndespite resistance to his candidature emerged Vice-Chancellor. Under his\n leadership, some 30 teaching and non-teaching staff have been \ndismissed, according to University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Association has \nexpressed fears, a culture of silence is spreading through out campus. \nBut the sacking of three lecturers appeared to have shattered the \nperceived silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Principal of the College of Languages Education at Ajumako, Prof. Ephraim Avea Nsoh was sacked because he had not been cooperating with other management members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also,\n the local President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana \n(UTAG), Dr. Frimpong Kakyire Duku, was sacked after initiating legal \naction against his employer \u201cwithout any cause\u201d and without exhausting \ninternal procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An\n Alumni representative on the University Council, Dr. Emmanuel Osei \nSarpong, was sacked because he allegedly disrespected the University \nCouncil and does not back its decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But backing the lecturers, the students have been protesting for three consecutive days. They chanted \u201cbring back our lecturers,\u201d taking inspiration from the campaign hashtag, #BringBack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UTAG has declared solidarity for the student protests but cautioned against excesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
