President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is urging Africans to join \nforces with the rest of the world to halt climate change in view of the \nfact that the continent\u2019s environment and economies were the most \nsusceptible to the effects of what he described as a destructive \nphenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cautioned that since agriculture<\/a>, water and energy were essential drivers of development on the continent and characteristically sensitive to changing climate, it required bold and concrete steps to protect global climate from warming beyond unreasonable limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI call on all Africans to support and join in the fight against climate change; it is imperative that we join the call as enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a> to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystem, sustainable land forest, combat desertification and stop land degradation,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Akufo-Addo gave the charge when he addressed a high-level \nsession of the ongoing five-day Africa Climate Week conference in Accra \nyesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was on the theme: \u201cClimate in Africa: A race we can win.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was organised by the United Nations Framework Convention on \nClimate Change (UNFCCC), with the support of the Ministry of \nEnvironment, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Environmental \nProtection Agency (EPA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact of global warming<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President noted that global warming had considerable\n impact on the fundamentals required for survival on earth and cited \ninstances such as the rising sea levels, severe and extreme weather \nconditions, including droughts, floods, erratic rainfall patterns and \ngrowing desertification as some of the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated that for Africans, the ravages of climate change affected \nthe continent the most and that the week-long programme afforded an \nopportunity to showcase the progress that had been made in tackling the \nphenomenon, as well as deepening the partnership required at the global \nlevel to combat it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Access to funds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Akufo-Addo noted that a major concern confronting almost \nall developing nations was the need to streamline access to \ninternational climate finance to complement national funding to reduce \ncarbon emissions on the African continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile we strive to do our bit to halt impact\n of climate change at the national level, we expect also a lot on the \ninternational level; one major issue of concern to us is the need to \nstreamline access to international climate finance to complement \nnational funding,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, he urged the participants to use the forum to come up with practicable ways to mobilise financial resources to support the implementation of their national climate actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must come up with practical solutions that will be beneficial to \nus in Africa and your solutions must resonate with the aspirations of \nour people and contribute to putting the world on a lasting sustainable \ndevelopment path,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interventions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With respect to Ghana, President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that \nthe measures that had been put in place to deal with climate change were\n contained in the National Coordinated Programme of Economic and Social \nPolicies (CPESDP) for 2017 to 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cited the Planting for Food and Jobs, One Village, One Dam, One \nDistrict, One Factory (1D1F), as some interventions that were geared \ntowards boosting industrialisation and rural development, as well as \nbuilding the country\u2019s resilience to the impact of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe strategic focus on the 1D1F initiative in the northern regions \nis to provide all-year-round access to water to smallholder farmers to \npractically have alternative livelihoods during the dry season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are also determined to make natural gas, which we have in abundance, available for the generation of electricity,\u201d he said,\n and tasked the Ministries of Energy and Finance to come up with special\n incentives for the introduction of electric cars into the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, \nProfessor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, said Ghana was implementing a number\n of climate change programmes, including the promotion of renewable \nenergy, aimed at lowering deforestation and forest degradation, as well \nas pursuing low carbon electricity, building resilience and investing in\n sea defence walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlighting the diverse effects of climate change on the country\u2019s \neconomy, he said the government had also engaged 20,000 young people to \nplant 10 million tree seedlings as part of the national effort to \nmitigate the negative effects of climate change in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commendation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Deputy Executive Secretary of the UNFCC, Mr Ovals Sarmad, said in\n February this year, 17 heads of state from the Sahel-Region approved an\n investment plan worth $400 billion to support the fight against climate\n change over the next 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis plan reflects the commitments of African countries under the \nParis Agreement and it is this kind of commitment that we must see \nacross the region and the world as a whole,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the President of the Conference of Parties (COP) 24, Mr Michael Kurtyka, urged African nations to step up their actions to combat climate change to enable them to fulfill their obligations under the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
