The\n dreaded return of a power crisis has been confirmed by policy \nthink-tank African Center for Energy Policy which has said, government \nis facing financial challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Executive Director Ben Boakye has said government is struggling to find money to buy fuel to power plants and generate electricity.\u00a0\u201cThis is how Mahama\u2019s \u2018dumsor<\/a>\u2019 started in 2011, and 2012\u201d, he noted the situation is d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ben Boakye ruled out installed capacity as the cause of the erratic power supply over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is not a technical challenge<\/a>,\u201d Ben Boakye said on Joy FM\u2019s Super Morning Show Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghana has close to 4,420MW installed capacity (made up of plants and dams) – nearly a 100% more than it needs \u2013 the country needs only 2,500 megawatts at peak hours to power homes or businesses. But \u201cWe don\u2019t have fuel\u201d Ben Boakye declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\n explained, Ghana\u2019s Karpower, with capacity to generate 450MW, is now \nonly producing 180MW because government has not held its side of the \nbargain by buying Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n 350MW Sunon Asogli power plant in Tema which has a daily gas \nrequirement of 120m standard cubic feet of gas\/per day (scfd) \u2013 gas \nexpected to come from Nigeria – is getting just about a half of their \nrequirement and therefore is unable to operate to full capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Western power enclave where TICO and TAPCO power plants can produce a combined 670MW is down due to technical challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghana Gas company and Eni Ghana and West African Pipeline Company (WAPCo) are undergoing what is termed reverse flow project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n project is aimed at ending dependence on WAPCo by roping in Ghana Gas \ncompany and Eni Ghana to push gas through a 150km pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\n it ends as expected in June 2019, dense gas from the Ghana Gas \ncompany\u2019s Aboadze power area to a host of gas-powered power plants in \nTema including Sunon Asogli, Cenpower and other independent power plants\n would augment power generation significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n Reverse Flow Project is a game-changer. It will mean trapped gas in the\n West and finally meet gas-hungry power plants in the East. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\n before this game-changer happens, a lack of fuel is changing the game \nfor Ghanaians grappling with uncertain supply of power which plagued the\n Mahama government between 2012 and 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that is needed to solve the problem is between 200MW and 3000MW supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A problem which the power plants in Tema alone could cure easily. If they had fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
