The Administrator for Ghana Region of OSHAssociation \u2013 UK, Mr. Richmond Jonas Quartey is hoping for zero incident for all workers in the course of their duties during their working life as the ILO leads the commemoration of this year\u2019s World Day for Safety and Health at Work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He however urged both organisations and their employees to take their safety culture seriously with employers taking a critical look at employee work schedules and general work environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Day for Safety and Health\nat Work 2019 attempts to take stock of a 100 years of work in improving\noccupational safety and health and looks to the future for continuing these\nefforts through major changes such as technology, demographics, sustainable\ndevelopment including climate change and changes in work organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Quartey was particularly concerned about the work\npostures \u201clike the way we sit, the effect of radiation on the body and other\nactions stresses the body\u201d. He encouraged workers to take days off or go on holidays\nto relax their limbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Admistrator for OSHAssociation \u2013 UK, Ghana Region spoke to aptnewsghana.com at the sidelines of a seminar organized by management of Bollore Transport and Logistics for staff of its Takoradi operations<\/a>. The health and safety seminar, was to commemorate this year\u2019s World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This year\u2019s events around the globe is inspired by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) centenary anniversary and discussions on the future of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Quartey added that \u201cbasically when we talk of the healthy\nand safe future of work, then we are looking at somebody being able to work for\na very longtime without health-related issues. Today I\u2019m going to hospital\u2026today\nI\u2019m going to hospital\u2026so at end of the day an employee keeps on visiting the\nhospital because of a tedious work schedule. This person will breakdown and the\nemployer would have to train another person which in most cases reduces productivity\nand cost\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou see many of the workers don\u2019t like going on\nholidays and other stuffs because of money, based on that we also encourage employers\nto pay better salaries so they can embark on holidays and return to work much\nenergized and refreshed for duty and also avoid health implications of stress\u201d,\nhe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his message to staff of Bollore\nTakoradi \u2013 General Manager, Jeff Lokko told aptnewsghana.com that the workforce\nis the most import assets of the company, \u201cthat is the human resource, without\nthem nothing can be done. So, we expect them to stay healthy and practice safe\nwork ethics on all our worksites\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Lokko revealed that \u201cone of the\ncardinal principles of Bollore working in the oil and gas industry is to have a\nQHSE policy that is very effective, sanctioned and approved by the country Managing\nDirector. He noted that management is committed to continually educate the\nemployees to make sure and make it a culture in their work procedures to report\nissues that borders on health safety and the environment to be dealt with expeditiously\nand brought to the attention of the very top management.  According to him, the arrangement makes it\npossible to avoid issues that may hang on for lack of attention to them …\u201dit\nis that guarantees our existence and therefore our future\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, all employees are enjoined to\npractice safe work ethics. And we do it with seminars, training, weekly tool\nbox meetings, especially with our drivers and workshop staff to appraise\nourselves of safe work ethics and issues that arise to forestall any damage, injuries,\ndeath or loss of work time\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main resource person at the\nseminar, Dr Bernard Dampson from the New Crystal Hospital in Takoradi, charged\nworkers to \u201cappreciate the significance of the work they do, its impact on the\neconomy and also its impact on our health\u201d. They should also remember that\nsafety starts with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that \u201cit\u2019s unethical for\nanybody\u2019s job to give him\/her health problems, it\u2019s unethical for anyone to die\non the job due to unsafe act and its unethical to do any job which is not safe\u201d.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Dampson therefore implored the\nBollore staff to recognize their industry and constantly avail themselves with\nthe risks and hazards at the various posts and know the mitigations to take against\nthem both at the organizational level and individually. \u201cThe organization can do\nall they could but if the individual is not ready or doesn\u2019t understand or\ndoesn\u2019t appreciate, they won\u2019t do what they have to do to augment the organisational\nfactors and vice versa. So, it\u2019s important that everybody working in any industry\nrecognizes the health and safety aspects of their job and how it should be taken\ncare of\u201d; he explained.

\nGlobal Report on\nHealth and safety<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official World Day on 28 April 2019 is only be the beginning of worldwide events and activities to continue throughout the rest of the year, around the theme of safety and health and the future of work, celebrating and building on the wealth of knowledge and action accumulated over 100 years as the world gets ready to face and appreciate the changes brought forward by the future of work.\u00a0

The ILO is expected to launch a global report to that effect, sharing the story of a 100 years in saving lives and promoting safe and healthy working environments. The report attempts to capture the evolution of safety and health from before the inception of the ILO in 1919 to date, going through the major turning points that have influenced this field and have influenced the way ILO has contributed to improving safety and health at work.\u00a0

More importantly, the global report will touch upon the changes in work arrangements, technology (digitalisation and ICT, platform work, automation and robotics), demographics, globalisation, climate change, and other drivers that are affecting the dynamics of safety and health and the nature of professions in this area, notwithstanding the persistent traditional and re-emerging risks and variations across developing and developed countries.\u00a0

To add further depth to the discussion, the ILO said on its website that it will feature 33 original think pieces from the real faces of the occupational safety and health community from around the world who will share strong messages and testimonials on OSH and the future of work from a variety of expert and practical aspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
