{"id":3742,"date":"2019-06-19T14:32:12","date_gmt":"2019-06-19T14:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aptnewsghana.com\/?p=3742"},"modified":"2019-06-19T14:32:12","modified_gmt":"2019-06-19T14:32:12","slug":"ghana-is-losing-its-rainforest-faster-than-any-other-country-in-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aptnewsghana.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/19\/ghana-is-losing-its-rainforest-faster-than-any-other-country-in-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana is losing its rainforest faster than any other country in the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"a1dbe africa\">Ghana\u2019s rainforest is being lost at an alarming rate,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/world-lost-belgium-sized-area-primary-rainforests-last-year?utm_campaign=GFW&amp;source=socialmediakit&amp;utm_medium=gfwsocial&amp;utm_term=2018tcl_4_2019\">according to a new report<\/a>\u00a0about the state of forests worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a1dbe africa\">Global Forest Watch (GFW) used updated remote sensing and satellite data from the University of Maryland and estimates that there was a 60% increase in Ghana\u2019s primary rainforest loss in 2018 compared to 2017, the highest in the world. The second highest was neighboring C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire with a 28% increase. Together, these two countries produce nearly 60% of the world\u2019s cocoa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a1dbe africa\">However, the Democratic Republic of Congo lost the largest size of tropical primary rainforest in Africa and collectively, the world lost 3.6 million hectares of primary rainforest last year\u2014an area the size of Belgium in 2018 alone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"b3916 _480bb c4750 _2a6f2\">\n<div id=\"inline-4\" class=\"article-content-ad\" data-google-query-id=\"COuC5pXf9eICFc5FGwod9EkIaA\">\n<p class=\"a1dbe africa\">The researchers said in 2002, just Brazil and Indonesia accounted for 71% of the tropical primary forest loss. Though those two countries accounted for 46% of total loss in 2018, loss rates in Africa in particular saw a significant increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a1dbe africa\">Besides providing habitat for animals including mountain gorillas, trees in rainforests can be \u201chundreds or even thousands of years old. They store more carbon than other forests and are irreplaceable when it comes to sustaining biodiversity,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/world-lost-belgium-sized-area-primary-rainforests-last-year?utm_campaign=GFW&amp;source=socialmediakit&amp;utm_medium=gfwsocial&amp;utm_term=2018tcl_4_2019\">says the World Resources Institute<\/a>\u00a0which leads the GFW project.<\/p>\n<div class=\"atlas-embed atlas-chart\" role=\"presentation\" data-id=\"SyZ7798s4\" data-width=\"640\" data-height=\"400\" aria-label=\"Embedded chart from TheAtlas.com\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.theatlas.com\/embed\/SyZ7798s4?style=dGhlbWU9djU=\" width=\"100%\" height=\"496\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"a1dbe africa\">For decades, Ghana was one of the leading timber exporters in the world but its forest cover has shrunk significantly over the years leaving timber processors in the country\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/2018\/04\/26\/we-may-soon-import-timber-from-liberia-lumber-traders-assoc\/\">contemplating the importation<\/a>\u00a0of lumber from neighboring countries and South America.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-content\" class=\"_230bb africa\">\n<p class=\"a1dbe africa\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcghana.org\/userfiles\/files\/MLNR\/Legislative%20Reforms%20for%20TT%20and%20B%20%20Final%20Report.pdf\">In a 2016 report<\/a>\u00a0[pdf p.3], the Forestry Commission, a government agency, said nearly 80% of Ghana\u2019s forest resources under state management had been lost to illegal logging activity since 1990.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a1dbe africa\">While clearing for cocoa farming is a leading cause of deforestation, mining is the biggest threat. Illegal small scale mining, known locally as \u201cgalamsey\u201d, has caused massive environmental damage which the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghana.gov.gh\/index.php\/media-center\/news\/5274-government-to-lift-ban-on-small-scale-mining-on-december-17\">government estimates would cost $29 billion<\/a>\u00a0to help restore. A ban imposed on all small scale mining activities has now been lifted while an inter-agency committee charged with overseeing adherence to environmental standards has been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghananewsagency.org\/social\/imcim-member-bissue-steps-down-for-corruption-investgation-146217\">embroiled in a corruption scandal.<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"atlas-embed atlas-chart\" role=\"presentation\" data-id=\"SJyYjKIiE\" data-width=\"640\" data-height=\"400\" aria-label=\"Embedded chart from TheAtlas.com\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.theatlas.com\/embed\/SJyYjKIiE?style=dGhlbWU9djU=\" width=\"100%\" height=\"496\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"a1dbe africa\">The government itself has also come in for criticism.
