The government\u2019s task force against illegal mining, Operation Vanguard have followed reports of increased illegal mining in various areas of the Eastern Region and arrested a total of 83 illegal miners in a dawn operation.<\/p>\n

The operation, conducted between 3 am and 6 am on Saturday morning found the illegal miners desecrating forest and land resources in their search for gold.<\/p>\n

The illegal miners were found to be operating within the Atiwa West District.<\/p>\n

Those arrested included a Nigerien and an Ivorian<\/a>. The 81 others were Ghanaians.<\/p>\n

The suspects are currently in the custody of civil police.<\/p>\n

About fifty illegal miners were arrested from the same area in May, with some operating within the Atewa range.<\/p>\n

The fifty suspected illegal miners included 34 Ghanaians, 10 Chinese and six Nigerians.<\/p>\n

Other arrests<\/b><\/p>\n

The task force in a separate operation arrested two Ghanaian suspects involved in the \u2018galamsey\u2019 operation in the Amansie West District.<\/p>\n

Additionally, 5 excavators, 2 motorbikes and 4 Water pumping machines were seized and some 22 Changfans were destroyed.<\/p>\n
