The NDC Proforum-NA believes Ghana\u2019s presidency is behind the rebellion in the country\u2019s Volta Region were some \u2018supposed\u2019 natives want to break to form their own state. The \u2018contested\u2019 Western Togoland region has always been the stronghold of National Democratic Congress. It lies between Lake Volta and the country\u2019s eastern border with West African neigbour Togo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The area was first colonized by Germany in 1884 and incorporated into the Togoland colony. After Germany’s defeat during the First World War, the colony of Togoland was divided between France and Britain as protectorates. The western part of Togoland became part of Britain’s Gold Coast colony, which became independent in 1957 to form modern-day Ghana. Togo gained independence from France in 1960. Several splinter groups have been demanding the area be recognized as a sovereign state; but it is not clear which group led the recent blockade of the major highway and attacked Ghana\u2019s state transport company STC and burnt some of their fleets.<\/p>\n

The President of the NDC Proforum \u2013 NA, Arnold Appiah taking his turn during the Proforum Hour on Radio Gold Live contended that the recent disturbances in the area were orchestrated by a \u201cbunch of criminals\u201d parading themselves as Voltarians. According to him, the real separatist groups are currently in government and fueling the tension in the area. Some 31 suspects are currently in police custody in connection with the recent rebellion.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Mr. Appiah wants Ghanaians to hold the President of the Republic; and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces Nana Akufo-Addo responsible for the recent rebellion which he claimed was timed to cause chaos in the opposition NDC stronghold in the upcoming general elections on December 7.<\/p>\n
