Spain’s National Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel following a frightening collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match.

The investigation, being handled by the Homicide Unit of the National Police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, follows the death of the 30-year-old forward on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Monday’s encounter.

The incident has attracted widespread attention across the football world, raising questions about player safety, the risks associated with high-speed challenges and the circumstances surrounding fatal injuries during competitive football.

Spanish authorities have confirmed that the case is now under judicial supervision. However, the opening of an investigation does not automatically mean that a criminal offence has been established or that the opposing goalkeeper has been found responsible for the player’s death.

How the fatal collision happened

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, November 2, during a Spanish second-division fixture between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium in Tenerife.

The match was finely poised at 2-2 when a long ball sent De Miguel forward in the closing stages of the encounter.

FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge for the ball, resulting in a violent collision with the Tenerife striker.

The impact left De Miguel unconscious on the pitch, prompting players from both teams to immediately call for medical assistance.

Owono was shown a straight red card following the challenge, while medical personnel spent several minutes attending to the injured striker.

The match was subsequently abandoned, with the score remaining 2-2.

De Miguel reportedly suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and was resuscitated before being transported by ambulance to the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Although the club initially reported that his condition was stable despite the severity of his injuries, a subsequent update indicated that his neurological condition had deteriorated.

He died at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3.

Homicide Unit begins investigation

Following the striker’s death, Spain’s National Police opened an investigation through its Homicide Unit to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

Reports from Spanish media indicate that investigators are expected to reconstruct the events leading to the collision and establish the circumstances under which De Miguel sustained the injuries that preceded his death.

The matter has also been referred to the judicial authorities in Tenerife.

The involvement of the Homicide Unit has generated considerable public interest, particularly because the incident occurred during an official football match rather than in circumstances initially suggesting a deliberate attack.

However, Spanish judicial procedures require an investigation into deaths that do not have an established natural cause. Such investigations may be opened even where the death is suspected to have resulted from an accident.

This means the police investigation should not be interpreted as evidence that Owono deliberately caused De Miguel’s death.

The central issue is to establish what happened during the challenge, the nature of the injuries sustained and whether there are any grounds for legal responsibility beyond the disciplinary action taken during the match.

What happens to goalkeeper Jesús Owono?

Owono was immediately sent off after the collision, with the referee judging his challenge to be a serious infringement during the contest for possession.

The sending-off represents the sporting disciplinary response to the incident. The police investigation, however, is a separate process concerned with the circumstances of the striker’s death.

A red card does not automatically establish criminal negligence or criminal liability.

Spanish authorities will have to consider the available evidence, including the nature of the challenge, the circumstances of play and the relevant medical findings, before any conclusions can be reached.

At the time of reporting, there had been no confirmed finding of criminal responsibility against Owono.

Football world mourns Jesús de Miguel

The death of the Tenerife forward has triggered an outpouring of condolences from football clubs, players and supporters.

CD Tenerife announced his death in an emotional statement, expressing profound grief and extending its support to his devastated family, teammates and everyone associated with the club.

FC Andorra also expressed its condolences, describing the news as devastating and sending its sympathies to De Miguel’s family and the Tenerife football community.

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, who is associated with FC Andorra’s ownership, also paid tribute to the deceased striker.

Real Madrid and Barcelona were among the prominent clubs that expressed sympathy following the tragedy.

The Spanish Football Federation also announced the postponement of scheduled Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures on Tuesday as a mark of respect.

The tributes reflect the shock that has swept through Spanish football following the sudden death of a player who was only 30 years old.

Who was Jesús de Miguel?

Jesús de Miguel Alameda was a 30-year-old Spanish professional footballer who played as a forward for CD Tenerife.

He built much of his career in Spain’s lower divisions, representing several clubs, including Leganés B, Inter Madrid, Fuenlabrada, Navalcarnero and Unionistas de Salamanca.

He later joined Castellón in 2023, where he played an important role in the club’s promotion campaign to Spain’s second division in 2024.

De Miguel moved to CD Tenerife in the summer of 2025 and became part of the club’s squad following its return to competitive second-tier football.

His death has therefore come as a devastating blow to his teammates, supporters and the wider Spanish football community.

A tragedy that raises questions about football safety

The death of De Miguel has once again drawn attention to the physical risks professional footballers face during competitive matches.

Goalkeepers frequently leave their penalty areas to challenge attacking players, particularly when attempting to intercept long passes or prevent clear scoring opportunities.

These situations can produce high-impact collisions, especially when both players are moving at considerable speed and competing for the same ball.

While football’s laws provide disciplinary measures for dangerous challenges, the tragedy highlights the importance of effective medical preparedness, rapid emergency response and continued attention to player welfare.

For now, the focus remains on the investigation by Spanish authorities and the need to establish the precise circumstances surrounding De Miguel’s death.

The football world will also remember the Tenerife striker for his contribution to the game, while his family, teammates and supporters mourn a life and career cut tragically short.
