The Shama District Police in the Western Region have stopped a planned demonstration for May 8, 2017 by some agitated persons in the District who are protesting the nomination of Joseph Amoah, who would be presented for endorsement as the Chief Executive for the local assembly on the day.
Supi of Asafo No 1, Nana Gyekye; Emmanuel A. P Anaman – Secretary of the Esemaman Development Association; Ebenezer Amankwandoh – Chairman of Shama Youth for Development and Isaiah Mensah an Executive Member of the Shama Business Forum had written to the police seeking permission to exercise their democratic right to express their displeasure with President Akufo Addo’s pick as his representative at the enfant district.
In the letter dated May 2, 2017, the group said Joseph Amoah was not suitable for the position because “he has in perpetuity been insulting the people of Shama on radio stations, NPP meetings and public gatherings”. He has also been accused of inciting division between the coastal communities and the farming enclaves in the district.
Furthermore, the letter said they found it “outrageous and incredible” that both the MP and the DCE nominee are from Inchaban – one of the communities in the Shama District at the expense of the other fifty-three (53). They also contend that the President’s nominee was once a DCE during the J. A. Kufour era and does not need a second time in the Akufo Addo government.
However, in a reply dated May 5 2017, Deputy Superintendent Mr. Innocent K. Amemo – cited the Public Order Act 1994 Act 941 which required that the group notifies the police 5 days before such special event. They have subsequently been advised to decide postponing the demonstration and communicate their decision to the Shama District police or face the consequences should they flout the law.
