Savelugu-Nanton Riots: MCE back at work under 24/7 security as police sniffs out ring leaders

Police are maintaining a 24 hour security for embattled MCE for the Savelugu-Nanton Municipality in the Northern Region Hajia Ayishetu Seidu as she reported for active duties today [June 19, 2017].

Rioting youths against the President’s appointee who garnered over 80 percent endorsement from the assembly came face to face with anti-riot police and some military beef-ups guarding the MCE as she reported for her first day at work last week.

Rubber bullets had to be used to dispel the agitated crowd believed to be members of the governing NPP who contended, the woman was unknown to them.

That claim has meanwhile been shut down by the regional executives of the party who revealed Hajia Seidu had been a financier of the NPP campaign in the northern region and suspect some mischief from opponents bent on frustrating the Flag Staff House.

Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer ASP Ibrahim Tanko told Jesse Agyapong on the Radio XYZ Morning Xpress that: “what we know is to provide her with the necessary security for now so that whatever bad intention someone might have against her that person would not be able to execute it”.

He further revealed police were undertaking some investigation that would lead to apprehending those behind the unrest. “When I talk about the root of this I’m talking about those who are making the claims and the extent to which they want to carry on or they want to carry out that particular claim,” ASP Tanko explained.

Meanwhile on the same current affairs programme, Personal Assistant to the MCE Haruna Illiasu said his boss was poised to unify the people for development of the area. The Regional Minister had met stakeholders and the new MCE was also to meet them to know what the concerns were and address them.

According to Mr. Illaisu, all the claims against Hajia Seidu were all “cooked up lies”. “Without any fear of contradiction and without equivocation that Hajia ‘Insha-Alla’ would be reporting to work latest by 9 am to do the normal work as the MCE for Savelungu-Nanton Municipality” he added enthusiastically.
