Obrempong Hima Dekyi calls on President to intervene in Dixcove chieftaincy tensions

Chief of Upper Dixcove Obrempong Hima Dekyi (XIV), is calling the attention of President Akufo-Addo to seemly tensed chieftaincy dispute between factions in Dixcove.

Aptnewsghana reporter Benjamin Bray has picked up information that the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council has issued three (3) weeks ultimatum for, H.E. Nana Addo Danquah Akufo- Addo and other relevant stakeholders to respond to the Chieftaincy rivalry between Upper and Lower Dixcove to avoid any further mayhem that may undermine the cordiality between future generations among the two traditional areas.

There has been an uneasy calm for decades between the two traditional areas in the Ahanta land of the western region since the departure of Nana Hima Dekyi (XIII) who joined her ancestors. Subsequently it is believed that Lower Dixcove Traditional Area comprises of thirty-nine (39) communities while Upper Dixcove is attached to nine (9) communities.

This endemic rivalry and misunderstanding  has even prompted some newly installed Chiefs, Queen mothers, Elders and residents  to seek refuge following an eruption of near violent confrontation where Nana Akwasi Agyemang (IX) Omanhene of Lower Dixcove allegedly mobilized addicted herb gangs “wee smokers” from  his Traditional Area to disrupt the launch of Dixcove Kundum festival on Saturday 25th May 2019.

Obrempong Nana Hima Dekyi (XIV), in a profound statement during the official launch of the annual celebration of Dixcove Kundum festival said the security system in the Ahanta land has been compromised for decades, while the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council does not trust the Ghana Police Service for protection of resodents.

The theme for the 2019 Dixcove Kundum festival is ” OUR YEAR OF RETURN: THE ROLE OF AHANTAMAN IN SUSTAINING OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE”.

“We picked up intelligence that the Omanhene of Lower Dixcove, Nana Akwasi Agyemang IX emphatically promised to disrupt the launching of 2019 Dixcove Kundum festival which his words came to pass, Obrempong Nana Hima Dekyi XIV alleges”.

Speaking to the Chiefs and dignitaries at the function Obrempong Nana Hima Dekyi (XIV) revealed that he on behalf of the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council requested for security enforcement from the Takoradi Divisional Command of the Ghana Police service for the protection of lives at the launching of Kundum festival but it proved to futile.

Obrempong Nana Hima Dekyi XIV has meanwhile urged the indigenes of Dixcove traditional areas to rekindle the spirit of enthusiasm to sustain its cultural heritage.
