Trump Agrees to Grant Visa to Mother of Javits Frimpong After Mamdani Intervention

US President Donald Trump has reportedly agreed to grant an immediate visa to Doris Adu Gyamfi, the mother of 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong, who was fatally shot in the Bronx, New York, last Thursday.

The development follows an intervention by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who disclosed on Saturday, October 31, that he had spoken directly with President Trump about the family’s desperate wish to have Javits’ mother travel from Ghana to the United States to bid farewell to her son.

In a statement shared on social media, Mayor Mamdani said the President had agreed to facilitate an immediate visa for the bereaved mother.

“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away. Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person. I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately,” Mamdani stated.

The mayor added that New York City was mourning the tragic death of the young Ghanaian.

However, the White House had not independently confirmed the visa arrangement at the time of reporting, according to the Associated Press.

Ghanaian Government Intensifies Efforts to Secure Justice

The latest development comes after Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs pledged the government’s full support to Javits’ family and promised to work with US authorities to ensure justice.

In a press statement issued on Friday, October 30, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that he had spoken directly with Javits’ father, Thomas Frimpong, to express the government’s condolences and assure him of its commitment to supporting the family’s pursuit of justice.

“We will pursue justice, and we’ll make sure that those who did this do not get away with it,” the Minister assured the bereaved father.

Officials from Ghana’s Permanent Mission in New York also visited the family to convey the government’s sympathy and solidarity.

The Ministry further pledged to provide appropriate legal and consular assistance while working with American authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.

Police Searching for Three Teenage Suspects

Meanwhile, the New York Police Department (NYPD) is continuing investigations into the fatal shooting, with three teenage suspects reportedly being sought in connection with the incident.

According to CBS New York, investigators are looking for three boys believed to be between 16 and 18 years old.

The suspects were reportedly last seen wearing black clothing and blue surgical masks.

Javits was shot once in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont section of the Bronx.

Police officers who responded to the incident rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

As of November 1, no arrests had been reported, and police had not established a motive for the killing.

Father Raises Concerns About Alleged School Bullying

The circumstances surrounding Javits’ death have also raised concerns about alleged bullying he experienced at school before the shooting.

His father, Thomas Frimpong, previously told CBS New York that the school principal had informed him about an incident involving his son and two other students who were reportedly suspended following a confrontation.

Thomas said Javits had complained repeatedly about being bullied, particularly during lunchtime at school.

A school bus attendant also told CBS New York that he was aware of at least two students being suspended over allegations of bullying involving the teenager.

However, investigators have not confirmed any connection between the reported school bullying and the fatal shooting.

Javits was described by his father as a quiet and intelligent teenager who had dreams of becoming a medical doctor.

He arrived in the United States from Ghana approximately one year before his death to reunite with his father and pursue a better future.

Ghanaian Community Demands Justice

The killing has generated widespread sadness among Ghanaians at home and abroad, particularly within the Ghanaian community in New York.

The tragic death of a teenager who had barely begun his life in America has renewed conversations about youth violence, school bullying and the safety of children in the United States.

For the Frimpong family, the immediate concern is securing justice and ensuring that those responsible for the killing are identified and brought before the law.

The reported intervention by President Trump offers a glimmer of hope that Javits’ mother may be able to travel to the United States to reunite with her family during this painful period.

As investigations continue, Ghanaians will be watching closely for answers and accountability in a case that has deeply shaken the nation.

Apt News Ghana will continue to follow developments in the Javits Frimpong case.
