Sakumono Double Murder: 72-Year-Old Suspect Arrested at Tikrom Hideout; Police Retrieve Pistol, 7 Bullets

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 72-year-old Samuel Christopher Osei Anto, the key suspect in the murder of two relatives at NTHC Estate, Sakumono, and retrieved a Smith & Wesson pistol with seven rounds of live ammunition from him.

The suspect was apprehended at his hideout in Tikrom, near Ejisu, in the Ashanti Region, on Sunday, November 1, 2026, following intelligence gathered by the police.

The arrest has been officially confirmed in a press statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Command’s Public Affairs Unit on Monday, November 2, 2026.

The statement, signed by Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Region, said the suspect had been wanted in connection with the killing of two persons at NTHC Estate, Sakumono, in the Greater Accra Region.

Police retrieve firearm and ammunition

According to the police statement, a team of officers acted on intelligence regarding the suspect’s whereabouts and proceeded to his hideout, where they successfully apprehended him.

During the operation, officers retrieved a Smith & Wesson pistol together with seven rounds of live ammunition from the suspect.

The firearm and ammunition have since been retained as exhibits to support ongoing investigations.

The police confirmed that Samuel Christopher Osei Anto is currently in custody and assisting investigators with inquiries into the double murder.

The statement did not indicate whether the recovered firearm was the weapon allegedly used in the Sakumono killings.

GH¢500,000 financial dispute allegedly triggered killings

Preliminary investigations into the incident had indicated that the murders allegedly arose from a financial dispute involving the deceased, George Atuguba, aged 57, and the suspect.

According to the police, George Atuguba had allegedly borrowed GH¢500,000 from the suspect but failed to repay the money.

The financial disagreement is believed to have triggered the events leading to the fatal shooting of the two victims.

However, the police have described the circumstances as preliminary findings, and the full details of the alleged dispute are expected to emerge as investigations continue.

Irene Atuguba and George Atuguba killed at Sakumono

The arrest follows an earlier press release issued by the Accra Regional Police Command on October 30, 2026, concerning the murder of Irene Atuguba, aged 47, and George Atuguba, aged 57.

The two victims were reportedly shot at their residence at NTHC Estate, Sakumono, in the Greater Accra Region.

The incident triggered a police investigation and a manhunt for Samuel Christopher Osei Anto, who was subsequently declared wanted.

The police also arrested Beatrice Mumuni, 47, in connection with the case.

Preliminary police accounts indicated that Mumuni allegedly accompanied the principal suspect to the victims’ residence before the shooting incident.

Her arrest preceded the apprehension of Osei Anto.

GH¢100,000 reward and nationwide manhunt

Following the incident, the Ghana Police Service announced a GH¢100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the principal suspect.

The reward was part of efforts to encourage members of the public to provide credible information to assist investigators.

The suspect’s eventual arrest at Tikrom, near Ejisu, represents a significant development in the investigation, as police have now secured custody of the individual they had declared wanted.

The police statement, however, did not indicate whether the reward would be paid to any informant or whether the arrest resulted directly from information provided by a member of the public.

Suspect remains in police custody

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Samuel Christopher Osei Anto remains in custody and is assisting with investigations.

The recovered pistol and seven rounds of ammunition have been retained as exhibits.

Investigators are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the murders, determine the role of each suspect and gather evidence for possible prosecution.

The police have not yet announced any formal charges against Osei Anto in the November 2 statement.

The arrest brings a major development to the Sakumono double murder investigation, which has attracted significant public attention following the deaths of George Atuguba and Irene Atuguba.

APT News Ghana will continue to monitor the case and report further developments as the Ghana Police Service releases additional information.
