NAIMOS Director Colonel Kwame Sam Appiah
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested some suspected illegal miners at Subin Akwaboaso in the Central Region following an enforcement operation that encountered considerable resistance from individuals allegedly armed with cutlasses, firearms and other offensive weapons.
The arrests were made on Sunday, November 1, 2026, during an operation conducted by NAIMOS personnel in collaboration with members of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS).
In a statement issued on Monday, November 2, 2026, the Secretariat said the enforcement team faced significant obstruction from a group of individuals, some of whom were wielding weapons that posed a threat to the safety of personnel and other persons present.
According to the statement, the enforcement operation was conducted under the direction of the NAIMOS Director of Operations, Colonel K. S. Appiah.
Despite the resistance encountered, the team reportedly exercised maximum restraint and adopted decisive measures to prevent the situation from escalating.
The Secretariat emphasised that its personnel remained committed to carrying out their duties within the confines of the law while ensuring the safety of officers, accompanying journalists and members of the public.
NAIMOS has reiterated its position that any attempt to obstruct lawful anti-illegal mining operations constitutes a serious concern.
The Secretariat warned that individuals suspected of attacking its personnel or obstructing enforcement activities would be referred to the relevant authorities for the necessary legal action.
It further stressed its commitment to operating within the law, with the application of necessary and proportionate measures to protect its personnel and civilians during operations.
Community leaders and residents have also been urged to support lawful anti-illegal mining activities and channel any concerns through the appropriate authorities.
The Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to the fight against illegal mining, stating that it would continue working with the Government, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, security agencies, regulatory institutions and local communities.
NAIMOS said the collaborative approach remains essential to protecting the environment and consolidating gains made in the fight against illegal mining.
The latest operation at Subin Akwaboaso underscores the security challenges confronting enforcement teams in their efforts to combat illegal mining, particularly where resistance from individuals threatens the safety of personnel and the public.
The Secretariat has maintained that it will continue its operations with restraint, professionalism and adherence to the law.
