Legon suicide victim suffered ‘psychological problem’

Police say they have discovered prescription medication in the room of the 23-year-old University of Ghana student who fell to her death on Wednesday.

Doctors are yet to confirm what the drugs are meant to treat, however, Legon District Commander, DSP Ofori Anokye, says officers suspect the victim was using the medication to treat a psychological problem.

“I asked the father if the lady had a medical condition, the father said yes she has a medical condition and that when she came for first year in 2012 she had to defer the course till 2013; and that there is a doctor at Valley View University who is treating her,” he told Joy News’ Favour Nunoo.

He adds that after pressing further the father revealed that the problem was mental in nature.

“The father said [her medical condition] was psychological. We took [the] drugs from her room which we are going to give to the medical doctor to explain to us what they are meant for,” he said.

Jennifer Nyarko, a Consumer Science student, allegedly jumped from the fourth floor of her Akuafo Hall Annex A room 407 and was found by porters Wednesday dawn with severe head injuries.

It is unclear what may have caused her to jump or fall from that height but some students say she has been moody and kept a lot to herself in the days leading to the incident.

According to reports, she was with her roommates on Monday evening, but at dawn Wednesday, they were alerted to check to see if every member of the room was there.

That was when they realised that she was nowhere to be found although they said they slept together with her in the room.

A sister of the deceased who was at the morgue to identify her told Joy News’ Matilda Wemegah that Jennifer was not feeling well the whole of last week.

Public Relations Officer of the university, Stella Amoah said they spoke to Akuafo Hall authorities who said they heard a loud noise at dawn at about 4:30 am.
