119 arrested, 85 fined for open defecation in 2018- Mayor for STMA

In a review of performances and activities taken by the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly in the year 2018, in terms of environmental health, Mayor for the city, Anthony K.K Sam has revealed that a total of 119 residents were arrested for open defecation.

Out of this number, 85 were fined, whiles 27 of them were prosecuted. He mentioned that about seven of them were minors.

Mr K.K Sam disclosed that landlords shall be prosecuted should they fail to adequately provide toilet facilities at their residence.

The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis scored zero in a 2018 District league table by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana, a situation that triggered a decision by the assembly to set up sanitation courts to sanction persons involved in insanitary practices.

Mr. Anthony K.K Sam continued that noise pollution remains a major nuisance to residents and the city authorities. He disclosed that the assembly shall confiscate and prosecute noisemakers to serve as a deterrent to others.

“I want to clearly state that as part of the enforcement of the assembly’s bye-laws, the environmental health department will be embarking on activities to seize any musical instrument found to have been used in making noise by the various establishments. And the retrieval of these items will attract a fine”, he intimated.
