Ghana's private transport operators have reportedly called off the November 4 strike over TraffiTech-GH and trading at bus stops as negotiations continue.

Private road transport operators have reportedly rescinded their decision to embark on a nationwide strike on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, over concerns surrounding the implementation of the TraffiTech-GH traffic enforcement system and the occupation of designated bus stops by traders.

Information available to aptnewsghana.com indicates that the transport operators have directed their drivers to continue providing commercial transport services while negotiations with relevant stakeholders continue.

The development is expected to bring relief to thousands of commuters who had been preparing for possible disruptions to public transport services across the country.

The reported decision comes barely 24 hours before the planned industrial action, which was expected to affect commercial transport operations nationwide.

Transport operators rescind planned strike

According to information reaching aptnewsghana.com, the operators have instructed their drivers to disregard the earlier directive to park their vehicles and instead maintain normal commercial transport services on Wednesday.

The decision is understood to have been taken to allow further discussions with stakeholders, including the relevant government authorities, as efforts continue to resolve the concerns raised by the transport unions.

Although the reported suspension of the strike is welcome news for commuters, it does not necessarily mean the underlying disagreements have been resolved. The operators are expected to continue engaging the relevant authorities until a mutually acceptable arrangement is reached.

As at the time of publication, aptnewsghana.com had not independently obtained a formal joint statement from all the unions confirming the withdrawal of the strike notice. The development is therefore being reported on the basis of information received by the news desk.

Why the transport operators threatened a strike

The planned industrial action followed growing disagreements between commercial transport operators and the authorities over the implementation of the TraffiTech-GH digital traffic enforcement system.

Five transport groups had announced plans to withdraw their services on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, citing what they described as the government’s failure to address the occupation of designated bus stops and pedestrian walkways by traders.

The groups included:

  • Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC.

  • Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana.

  • True Drivers Union.

  • Ghana Committed Drivers Association.

  • Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.

In a notice dated November 1, the unions directed commercial drivers to park their vehicles nationwide until further notice.

They argued that drivers were being subjected to traffic enforcement and possible penalties through TraffiTech-GH while traders continued to occupy spaces legally designated for picking up and dropping off passengers.

The unions maintained that it was unfair to penalise drivers for stopping at unauthorised locations when designated bus stops had allegedly been taken over by traders.

TraffiTech-GH not the main problem, GPRTU clarifies

The GPRTU has previously clarified that it is not opposed to the introduction of TraffiTech-GH, acknowledging the importance of technology in improving road safety and reducing traffic violations.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Union, Samuel Amoah, said the concern was about the failure to address challenges confronting commercial drivers while introducing stricter enforcement measures.

In an interview with Adom FM, Mr Amoah indicated that the union supported the system’s potential to improve driver discipline but wanted authorities to also address the activities of traders occupying roadsides, bus stops and lorry stations.

He argued that the enforcement of traffic regulations should be accompanied by measures that provide drivers with suitable places to load and unload passengers.

Takoradi Market Circle among affected areas

The controversy has particular significance for commuters and commercial drivers in Sekondi-Takoradi.

Takoradi Market Circle was among the major transport locations identified by union representatives as experiencing problems with trading activities around designated bus stops.

The occupation of transport spaces by traders and hawkers has long been a source of concern for drivers, passengers and other road users.

The operators argue that the situation makes it difficult for commercial vehicles to operate safely and efficiently, particularly during peak hours.

The concerns also raise questions about the responsibilities of local authorities in enforcing regulations governing public spaces and ensuring that transport terminals remain accessible.

What happens next?

The reported decision to suspend the strike provides an opportunity for dialogue between transport operators, the government, the Ghana Police Service and other relevant stakeholders.

The central issues requiring attention include the removal of traders from designated bus stops, the provision of appropriate loading and unloading areas, and the establishment of clear operational guidelines for commercial drivers under the new traffic enforcement system.

For commuters, the immediate implication is that commercial transport services are expected to operate normally on Wednesday, November 4, rather than face the nationwide disruption previously announced.

However, the situation remains subject to the outcome of ongoing negotiations.

The authorities will need to demonstrate that the concerns raised by transport operators are receiving attention, while the unions must also ensure their members comply with legitimate traffic regulations.

Ultimately, the success of TraffiTech-GH should not be measured only by the number of traffic violations detected or penalties issued, but also by its contribution to safer roads, responsible driving and an efficient public transport system.

aptnewsghana.com will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on the outcome of the negotiations and any further directives from the transport unions.
