Ghana has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of Charles Kofi Wayo, popularly known as Kofi Wayo, a prominent businessman and outspoken political figure.
According to reports, Kofi Wayo passed away in the early hours of Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Nyaho Clinic in Accra.
He was a constituent of the Ayawaso area who lived in East Legon until his passing.
His death brings to an end the life of one of Ghana’s most unconventional political personalities, whose blunt commentary on governance, corruption and the conduct of political leaders earned him significant public attention over the years.
Kofi Wayo: A Distinctive Voice in Ghanaian Politics
Kofi Wayo rose to national prominence through his outspoken criticism of successive governments and his unconventional approach to political activism.
Popularly known as “Chuck” Wayo, he became a familiar face in Ghana’s political discourse, particularly during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
His political journey included association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the People’s National Convention (PNC), and the formation of his own political movement, the United Renaissance Party (URP).
Wayo’s willingness to criticise political leaders, including those within parties he had previously supported, distinguished him from many other political actors.
He was widely recognised for his strong opinions on corruption, economic management, public accountability and the welfare of ordinary Ghanaians.
His Parliamentary Ambition in Ayawaso East
Kofi Wayo’s political ambitions extended beyond public commentary.
In the 2000 general elections, he contested the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NPP but lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Dr Mustapha Ahmed.
His parliamentary ambition and subsequent political developments became significant chapters in his career.
In December 2003, Wayo announced his departure from the NPP and joined the PNC, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s performance and its failure to fulfil campaign promises.
He later established the United Renaissance Party, seeking to provide an alternative to Ghana’s dominant political parties.
Despite his ambitions and public visibility, he did not secure a parliamentary seat or the presidency.
Kofi Wayo Leaves Active Politics
In March 2017, Kofi Wayo announced that he was stepping away from active politics to focus on farming and supporting rural farmers.
His decision was accompanied by criticism of successive governments over what he described as inadequate attention to the needs of farmers in rural communities.
He indicated that his new focus would involve providing farming implements and other support to help improve agricultural production.
The announcement marked a significant shift from his highly visible political engagements to a comparatively quieter life.
In recent years, Wayo had maintained a low public profile, with fewer appearances in political discussions and media engagements.
Funeral Arrangements Yet to Be Announced
As news of his reported passing spreads, further details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death, funeral arrangements and possible tributes from political associates are expected to emerge.
The family is yet to make additional information publicly available at the time of publication.
Kofi Wayo’s death marks the end of a colourful chapter in Ghanaian political history, particularly for those who followed his outspoken interventions and unconventional political journey.
