National cathedral: President Akufo-Addo inaugurates board of trustees

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sworn in the board of trustees for the construction of the national cathedral for interdenominational prayers for Christians despite growing concerns from a section of Ghanaians over the building.

Members of the board of trustees are: Most Reverend Samuel Asante Antwi (chairman) and his assistant, Archbishop Charles Palmer-Buckle. Prophet Kusi Boateng will be secretary to the board. The rest of the members are: Apostle Opoku Onyina, Rev. Joyce Aryee, Presbyterian Moderator Rt. Rev. Prof Rev Cephas Omenyo, Rt. Rev. Ofei Akrofi, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams, Rev. Eastwood Anaba, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, Pastor Mensa Otabil, Rev Dr Frimpong Manso and former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Prof Emmanuel Martey.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of the chapel to mark the 60th anniversary of the country at the National Scholarship Secretariat but some Ghanaians have criticised the move, arguing that he should focus on the economy.

An Islamic scholar and security analyst Irbard Ibrahim has noted that building the cathedral close to State House signifies Christianisation of the country.

“Positioning this close to the State House for me sends a very subtle statement that Ghana is getting Christianised and it is not funny at all,” he stated when he appeared as a guest on Class FM’s Executive Breakfast Show on Monday, March 13.

James Kwabena Bomfeh, a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has filed a writ at the Supreme Court challenging government’s decision to build the cathedral. Mr Bomfeh does not believe it is the place of government to undertake such projects.

Osofo Kofitse Ahadzi, a cultural anthropologist and senior member of the Afrikania Mission, has spoken against it and wondered if that should be a priority for government.
