Takoradi: accident; 6 dead, 12 in critical condition

Six persons – four women and two men – have died while 12 others are in critical condition after a mini-bus ran into a defective heavy-duty truck Tuesday afternoon at Biahu in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.

According to the police, the truck, a Man Diesel with registration number GT 6620-B which was heading to Takoradi from Tarkwa, had one of its shafts detached upon reaching Biahu, but the driver managed to control the vehicle to safety and off the road.

The police said before the driver’s mate could pick the detached part however, the mini-bus with registration number WR 1607-18 and the inscription Christ Asomdwee Nka-Ho traveling with passengers to Takoradi emerged on top speed.

The police said the mini-bus driver, in an attempt to avoid the detached shaft lying in the middle of the road, crashed head-on into the back of the stationary truck resulting in the casualties.

It took personnel of the Fire Fervice and an ambulance team to extricate and bodies.

The driver of the mini-bus who was identified as James Safo survived and the injured 12 have been sent to Effia-Nkwanta Regional Referral Hospital and the Kwesimintsim District Hospital in the Twin-City of Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis and Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality respectively.

Eyewitness said, the driver of the mini-bus was on high speed therefore, when he came face to face with the object, he lost control.
